Bedford artist Kaye Lipscomb was awarded Best in Show for her entry, “Within Stillness Remains Potential for Action”, into Bower Center’s Paper Art National Juried Exhibition. Awards were presented on Friday, July 22, when the juror/judge, Robert Stuart, of Staunton VA, talked about the exhibit as a whole, the individual award winners, and made the presentations at the awards reception. An additional evening opening to see this exhibit will be on Friday, August 12, 5-7pm.
Other award recipients are: 2nd Place: Sachie Hayashi of Bronx NY; 3rd Place: Denise Phalan of Fairfax VA; 1st Place for Body of Work: Norman Carr of Wichita KS; 2nd Place for Body of Work: Marcia Cooper of Brooklyn NY; 3rd Place for Body of Work: Kari Souders of Villanova PA; and three Awards of Merit went to Sam Lasris of Oak Grove NC, Clary Charles of Conway SC, and Tobi Abrams of Arlington Heights IL.
The exhibit is comprised of sixty-eight artworks by thirty artists from thirteen states: California, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Mississippi, North Carolina, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, and Washington. There are many varied interpretations of art made with paper, or other media on paper and the exhibit is in the Sara Braaten Gallery and Lobby on the upper level and the Terrace Gallery and Lobby on the lower level.
This Paper Art exhibit was planned for the alternate year between the Biennial National Fiber Art Exhibition, the 3rd will be in 2023 (June 27-Aug 19) and falls during the time period of the July annual quilt show at the Bedford Central Library. A Mobile Art National Juried Exhibition has been decided for this summertime slot for the next alternate to Fiber Art in 2024.
Bower Center will be open on Friday evening, August 12, 5-7pm for extended hours to see the Paper Art National Juried Exhibition that will remain on view through Saturday, August 20 during the Center’s public hours, Tuesday through Saturday, 11am-3pm.
Visitors may also visit classroom facilities and art studios of Sally Carter and Arik Bryant on the lower level, and Veronica Jackson, Dawn Richerson, Dotti Stone, Perri Mason, Suzanne Paddock, Virginia Dickens, Lori Stetson, and Janie Mantooth on the third floor.
