BCM assistance services
Bedford Christian Ministries will be doing regular food distribution on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday mornings from 9 to 10:30 AM. Social distancing is practiced and streamlined procedures limit time in the building to 15 minutes or less. Food is brought out to your vehicle. Financial aid is available by appointment only and is separate from food assistance visits. Call 586-2633 to schedule an appointment or for general information.
Bedford Community Christmas Station
The Bedford Community Christmas Station, located in the 6 C’s Shopping Center, will begin accepting gently used/new items for our fundraising sales on Wednesday, February 1, 2023 between 10 and 4. Donations may be dropped off on each Tuesday or Wednesday until the end of July. We are unable to accept mattresses, box TV’s, torn/stained upholstered furniture, books, computer components, large exercise equipment, VHS tapes and cassettes. Fundraising sales will begin on March 1 through September 30, EVERY Tuesday and Wednesday from 10-4 and EVERY Saturday from 9-1. BCCS Food Pantry is open EVERY Tuesday and Wednesday from 10-4.
Bedford Urban Gardens
Join us for volunteer work days at Bedford Urban Gardens (BUG) on Saturday, March 25, 10 AM-12 Noon. Our community garden provides healthy, organic produce to help meet the needs of our community, and we are applying a new layer of good soil to the gardening beds to get ready for spring planting! Tools and bottled water are provided. We recommend garden gloves, garden shoes, a hat and sunglasses. Bedford Urban Gardens is located at 412 Jackson St., next to The Lofts apartments. A shred truck will be on-site to shred your personal documents. Bring your expired or unused medications to have them properly disposed of. The SML Democrats will hold demonstrations on first aid for opioid overdoses at 1pm at 16483 Moneta Road in Moneta. Lisa Via, from the Roanoke Drop-In Center of the Council of Community Services, will discuss the use of Narcan, a life-saving medication that can reverse an overdose from opioids. It’s almost time for GameFest again! The annual fundraiser is sponsored by the SML Women’s Club, and the proceeds will be distributed to local charities. This year’s recipients will be: Franklin County Warming Shelter; Healing Strides; SML Fireboats; Shepherd’s Table; and Scholarships for two high school seniors. Tickets are $25 per person and include lunch, beverages, and desserts. Participants will bring their own games and players and will form their own tables. Knitted and crocheted items will be for sale, as well as gently used books, and there will be a raffle and door prizes. Tickets can be purchased from a club member or by calling Denise DeWalt at 540-721-2911. The event will be held on April 19, at Trinity Ecumenical Parish in Moneta. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. and games will begin at 10:00 a.m. and end at 3:00 p.m.

Jefferson Choral Society Presents “Jesus, Son of Our Father” The Jefferson Choral Society invites you to the Lynchburg premiere of “Jesus, Son of Our Father,” an oratorio written in the classical tradition by Virginia composer Aaron Garber in collaboration with librettist Richard Bansemer. The oratorio will feature baritone soloist Philip Bouknight in the starring role of Jesus and tenor Jeff Prillaman, plus full choir and orchestra. Based on the Gospel of John, “Jesus, Son of Our Father” follows the events leading up to the crucifixion. The Thaxton Community Center will hold a Flea Market Fundraiser on Saturday, May 13 from 7am-2pm. (Rain date June 10). Free admission for buyers. Sellers, $20, bring your own tables (maximum 2). Senior Bingo. If you are 50 years or older and like to socialize and play Bingo, then this is the place for you. The Bedford County Parks and Recreation Department offers Bingo on the 4th Thursday of each month at the Bedford Moose Lodge. Cost is $1.00 per card with a limit of 4 cards per person. Start time of Bingo is 12:00 noon and doors open at 11:30 a.m. Boxed Lunches are also provided by Bedford County Parks and Recreation to participants at no additional charge, but we do ask that everyone please call to pre-register by the Monday before Bingo so that we may prepare enough boxes. Mind your Muscles Exercise Class. Tuesdays & Thursdays. 11:00 a.m. — 12:00 p.m. Bedford Recreation Office. Fee: $15 drop in fee or. $12 per class if you buy 4 weeks or more. Get excited for this one hour muscle building workout available for all ages and fitness levels. A professional trainer will guide you through a full body challenge to keep your joints healthy, bones dense, and muscles strong. With weights and resistance bands provided, you can make this as challenging as you want! All equipment provided. Classes are Tuesday and Thursday at 11am at the Parks and Recreation Office.
