HILLSVILLE –– Carroll County cut a 16-point third-quarter deficit to four points early in the fourth but the Cavaliers couldn’t make the comeback stick and Floyd County picked up an 89-72 Three Rivers District win Friday.

A 10-0 Floyd County run, capped by a three-point play by Dylan Bond and a 3-pointer from Ashton Agnew, had the Buffaloes (7-9 overall, 1-4 TRD) ahead 60-46 with 1:25 left in the third.

Starting with a Thomas Montgomery free throw with a minute left in the third, Carroll (6-14, 0-9) scored 10 straight points and Davis Reitzel’s transition 3-pointer brought the Cavaliers to within four, 60-56, with 7:11 to go.

Floyd County then won it at the free throw line, hitting 19 of 24 fourth-quarter attempts. Kaiden Swortzel, Gavin Herrington and Bond were a combined 16-of-18 from the line in the fourth.

Carroll County led for much of the first half with two Reitzel putbacks giving the Cavaliers a 21-17 lead after one. Ethan Richardson scored off a Floyd turnover to tie the game at 33 late in the half before the Buffaloes carried a 38-34 lead into the break.

Reitzel finished with 27 points and a dozen rebounds for Carroll County and Bryce Smoot tossed in 19 points.

Swortzel went 10-of-11 from the foul line and scored 28 for Floyd while Bond finished with 23.
