WYTHEVILLE –– Grayson County’s girls had a good week, going 2-2 during that span, but the Blue Devils struggled Friday night at George Wythe and incurred a 46-18 Mountain Empire District loss to the Maroons.

George Wythe was in control from on the onset, leading 16-4 after the first quarter and 31-8 at halftime.

Abby Berry scored 16 for the Maroons to lead all scorers. Kylie Pope dropped in 10 points for the Blue Devils.

Galax 53, Giles 23: The Maroon Tide held the Spartans to eight points over the final three quarters and took the easy MED win Friday in Galax.

The two teams were tied at 15 after the first quarter but Galax pulled out to a 25-20 lead by halftime. The Maroon Tide then outscored Giles 28-3 in the second half.

Saige Leonard and Jayden Leonard each scored 12 points to lead Galax while Karsyn Reed’s 16 led the Spartans.

Grayson County 52, Holston 42: The Blue Devils pulled away from a three-point ballgame in the second half and picked up a nondistrict win Thursday in Damascus.

Taking a 19-16 lead into the second half, Grayson County (4-14) got eight points from Kylie Pope in the third quarter to add to its lead and then went 8-of-13 from the foul line in the fourth to seal the win.

Pope finished with 14 points for the Blue Devils while Sierra Pope, Rebecca Cunningham and Rylan Conklin scored either eight or nine points each.

Forsyth Home Educators 40, State Line 37: The Rush played tough against the 21-4 Hawks but was unable to pull out the win last week at Fries School.

Forsyth jumped to a 13-6 lead after a quarter before State Line began reeling in the Hawks.

Forsyth was paced by Isa Bosch with 14 points. Aden Clark and Emily Vaughan scored 18 and 17, respectively, for the Rush.

George Wythe 61, Grayson County 46: The Maroons broke open a tight game in the fourth quarter and went on to snag the MED win Friday in Wytheville.

Grayson County trailed just 34-31 heading into the fourth quarter but George Wythe pumped in 27 fourth-period points to win going away.

Holden Cassell hit all four of Grayson’s 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 20 points. Ty Campbell knocked down five treys and scored 19 for Wythe, which got 13 points from Trey Rainey.

Giles led by five, 17-12, after eight minutes but Galax rallied into a 29-22 lead by halftime.

Shawn Peterkin and Josh Jemison led Galax with 24 and 11 points, respectively.

Grayson County 52, Holston 25: The Blue Devils dominated the Cavaliers in a nondistrict game last Thursday in Independence.

After opening up a 12-4 lead in the first quarter, Grayson County extended its advantage to 29-10 by halftime and to 47-15 by the start of the fourth quarter.

Eli Gillespie was the only scorer in double figures, dumping in 22 points for the Blue Devils.
