Johnny Garfield Ayers Sr., 77, of Galax, Va., passed away Sept. 1, 2022, at his residence. He was born in Surry County, N.C., on March 5, 1945, to the late Merritt and Ellen Pack Ayers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, BB Ayers and Joe Ayers; sister, Gladys Hale; and stepdaughter, Vicki Lynn Hicks.

He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Jean Spencer Ayers of the home; daughter, Jeannie LaTonya Reavis and husband, Brian, of Galax, Va.; sons, Johnny Garfield Ayers Jr. and wife, Brandy, of Woodlawn, Va., Tommy Ayers of Pulaski, Va., Danny Ayers of Blacksburg, Va., Wayne Ayers of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Dale Ayers of Winston-Salem, N.C.; stepson, Charles Michael Brown and wife, Shannon, of Woodlawn, Va.; sisters, Elizabeth Phillips and husband, Bill, of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Peggy Ayers of King, N.C.; brother, the Rev. Jay Ayers and wife, Linda, of Fla.; and stepson-in-law, Marshall Alan Hicks of Galax, Va.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held Sept. 3, 2022, at High Country Services at noon. Pastor Gary Horton officiated. Burial followed in Monta Vista Memorial Park with military honors. The family received friends from 11 a.m. until service time at High Country Services and other times at the residence.
